Reasons for Using a Double Opt in Email List
An email list is very important for a businessman in order to establish and maintain public relations with his or her potential and existing customers. Therefore, this email list should include exclusively those people’s email addresses who really want you to send them regular information regarding your product. In short, sending emails to someone who does not want his or her email inbox to be bombarded with the latest offers on some random subject or product can come across as spam, something you don’t want to do.
Spamming an individual by sending unwanted emails to him or her has its own misfortunes. Not only does your company earn a lousy reputation among your customers but you can also face multiple lawsuits. And if the individual is the vengeful sorts then he or she will send you spam emails in return.
If you think this is a small problem then think again. How would you react if you saw hundreds of porn sites sending you emails of lewd images and ridiculous “offers” to your inbox?
Unless you are a regular porn viewer you would be highly miffed. And there is no way for you to unsubscribe from every website that this individual has signed your email address up with. Therefore, you would have to make a new one and work on your email list all over again. You may even lose your Internet Service Provider if you become to be known as a spammer.
A double opt-in email list is a list of email addresses for which you receive confirmation from the recipients of these addresses twice. This confirmation is regarding their agreement to receive the latest updates on your product and the best offers available of the product you are advertising. A double opt-in is pretty literal in the way it works. You receive the list of single opt-ins first when people who have visited your website leave their email addresses in the space provided on it. This is their way of letting you know that they would like to receive emails from you. Now you take this list and send every one of them a confirmation email which contains a link that they have to click on to confirm the fact that they want you to send them emails to the address. This creates your double opt-in.
A single opt-in can be partially authentic in case someone subscribes another individual’s email address to the email list for your website without the latter’s knowledge. In this case you would be sending emails to someone who has not really signed up for them. This would create a bad impression of your company on the individual in question. Therefore, to know for sure that the people who have submitted their emails to your website are actually willing to receive further updates you should choose double opt-ins.
A lot of email list companies use the system of double opt-ins before sending emails on behalf of companies such as yours to those who have subscribed for it. They want to make sure that they are not spamming anyone. This will not only put your company in bad light, but it will also ruin the reputation of the email list company in the process.
Here’s to your success!

Great points, I have though about changing it to single opt in as many people seem to want to because you can get more sign ups and active email address that way. However you are right double opt in is the way to go to keep your integrity for yourself, your business and your subscribers.
